Title VI Announcements
November is Native American Heritage Month. There are over 500 Federally recognized Native Nations in the United States, with their own languages, customs and governments. During Native American Heritage Month, we will INQUIRE about what makes these Nations similar and what are the differences. One thing that brings people of all different Nations together is a Pow wow. POW WOW SINGERS--WHAT IS A VOCABLE Powwow singers are very important figures in the Native American culture. Without them there would be no dancing. The songs are of many varieties, from religious to war to social. As various tribes gathered together, they would share their songs, often changing the songs so singers of different tribes could join. With these changes came the use of “vocables” to replace the words of the old songs. Thus, some songs today are sung in “vocables” with no words. Yet they still hold special meaning to those who know the song. Many songs are still sung in Native American Languages either newly composed or revivals of old songs. These songs are reminders to the Indian people of their old ways and rich heritage.

All interested Title VI, Indian Education Program 6th and 7th grade students that are interested in a field trip to see Joseph Bruchac speak at West High School on November 27th, please pick up a Field trip Permission slip during lunch today or in room 218.  Please return these to the school office by Wednesday, November 21st to be included in the Field Trip.  If you have any questions, see Miss Carrie or Ms. Anne in room 218.
