International Mother Language Day
Today is International Mother Language Day. The United Nations recognizes, and celebrates this day, to honor all languages and the important role language has in maintaining cultural traditions throughout the world. Did you know that more than 50% of the approximately 7,000 languages spoken in the world are likely to die out within a few generations? That 96% of these languages are spoken by a mere 4% of the world's population. That only a few hundred languages are genuinely used in the education systems and the public domain? That less than 100 languages are used in the digital world?
